Adam & Luba Nikkel
Hello! We’re Adam and Luba Nikkel. I (Adam) have been living and serving in Ukraine since 2007, focusing on orphan care and church planting in the city of Kryvyi Rih. My journey to Ukraine began in 2002 when I joined a short-term missions team from the Free Church in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. After five years of participating in and eventually leading these teams, I sensed God clearly calling me to move to Ukraine permanently.
I am originally from Abbotsford, British Columbia, where my family still lives. In 2007, I followed God’s call and relocated to Kryvyi Rih, where I stepped into the leadership role of our orphanage ministry.
My wife Luba, who is from Ukraine, was already part of the ministry team. We were married in Ukraine in 2008 and are now raising our two children here. Our son is 12, and our daughter is 4. Both were born in Kryvyi Rih, where we continue to live and serve together.
Ministry in the Fire: Hope Rising in Ukraine
Ministry in Ukraine has always been difficult, and the war has only increased the challenges. At the same time, there is a growing spiritual hunger and openness to the gospel. In many ways, we are seeing the beginnings of revival.
Our orphanage ministry, Rays of Love, included a team of three young women, one young man, and four orphan graduates. We visited orphanages to run after-school and weekend Bible programs, and also served at a home for handicapped boys a few hours from our city.
When the war began, the orphans were evacuated. After a year in Canada, we returned and shifted our focus to our local church plant. Before, our church was 90% believers. Now, with many new people attending, that number is closer to 20%, giving us opportunities to reach unbelievers. We help with children’s programs, lead summer Bible day camps, and stay involved in worship and Sunday school. I serve on the worship team and help with maintenance, while Luba leads worship and teaches. Alongside our Ukrainian pastor, we also started a weekly youth group.
Though the orphan ministry has changed, we stay connected with graduates still in our city. We host Bible studies and support young moms from the orphanages with food, medicine, and baby supplies when needed.
Our original team has changed. Many left Ukraine, and one young man was conscripted. We are now working to rebuild the team and continue reaching orphan graduates in and around our city.

It is no secret that from the very beginning of the church, Christians have taken an active role in being missionaries and sending missionaries. Yet not all are called to be missionaries. We are called to make disciples though.
