Prayer Thought: God-dependent Prayer

In our ever-increasing culture (inside and outside the church) of co-dependency, self-sufficiency, and tolerance: everyone-does-what-they-think-is-right-in-their-own-eyes-so-don’t-you-dare-judge-me mentality, we MUST be a people who hold prayer not just as a spiritual discipline we know we need to do. Rather it must be the very passion of all we do in KM and the churches we aspire to assist.

“Prayer was the very lifeblood of the New Testament church; that is, the early believers in Christ truly lived out an attitude of God-dependency. Prayer, not self-sufficiency, was their habitual practice. That is, they did not trust in their own abilities, or in their own cleverness and wisdom, but on the power of God to accomplish His mighty work through the Spirit and the gospel… They became active in the labor of communication with Him by means of fervent prayer (Paul Tautges; Pray About Everything).”

Recall Jesus’ words, “Apart from ME you can do nothing (Jn. 15:5)!” This is complete God-dependency for everything we do in life. We are to pray without ceasing. So, it stands to reason that the how and what of praying is NOT to be done outside of dependence on Holy God. In fact, not a single thing we do for KM, our churches, and our personal lives are separate from grace-filled intimacy with our Father.

Prayer Action: 

Identify a couple of areas that you struggle with, at times, being fully dependent on God in all areas. Pray through them, asking forgiveness, if necessary, for trying to do these things in your own strength. Then spend time praising the Lord for how you are never alone and how the Lord goes before you in all you say and do
